All Souls Day
(Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed)
November 2nd
This Sunday at about 10:10am (before the regular 10:30am Mass at St. John’s), we will prayerfully read aloud the names of those for whom have been buried from St. John’s and those we have prayed via this list-serv from Creighton University at the time of their passing in the last year (since Nov. 1, 2024).
The St. John’s tower bell will be tolled for each person. The reading of names and the Mass will be livestreamed over the St. John’s YouTube channel, or clicking on the far right tab, “St. John’s Live.”
November is a time when we as a Catholic community pray for and remember all of our loved ones who have died. To enter into this special season of prayer and reflection, all are invited to inscribe the names of deceased loved ones in our parish Book of the Dead, located at the Shrine of St. Joseph (the patron of a happy death). All are also invited to bring photos of deceased loved ones to place near the Book. This year’s collection names and photos takes the form of a traditional Mexican ofrenda. More information on this cultural tradition is available at the shrine. This display serves as a tangible reminder of the Communion of Saints which binds all of us, living or deceased, into one Church. The Book of the Dead and photos will remain at St. Joseph’s Shrine through November 30. You may pick up your photos after the Masses that weekend.
